Recent research has shown that sitting down is slowing killing us. A news selling tagline you might think, but there is definitely science behind the headlines. If you think about it, it’s pretty obvious! I mean a sedentary lifestyle is not great- and is definitely far less healthy than an active one. However, it is only recently, that science has backed up our intuition. With reports that sitting down for long periods can increase the risk of health issues! Even though a desk job can lead to weight gain, this bad rap can be beat- just stand up more!
Here are 6 ways that you can stop sitting, and stand more, even at work.
1. Stand Whilst Waiting
When you are waiting for the printer, coffee machine, or whatever other contraption you need to get through your day, why not just stand up?! There is no reason why you need to sit- you can still look at your phone when standing, and sitting won’t make the time go by any quicker!
2. Stand Whilst Working
There is no rule that you have to sit at your desk at work, or at home. So why not, stand. You can even get special standing, or treadmill workstations to help you out! Standing will not only help burn more calories, but will also boost your productivity and keep your concentration levels high. Brilliant boosts in any job!
3. Stand Whilst Watching TV
Don’t be tempted to plonk down in front for the TV when you get home from work. No one needs to sit more after 8 hours at a desk. I am not saying that you can’t watch TV, because let’s face it; we all have those TV episodes we just can’t miss. Why not watch TV whilst walking, jogging or cycling in your home gym, to burn calories, and keep you healthy!
4. Stand Whilst Travelling
On train, plane or bus on way to work why not stand up and read, or listen to music? Even on long car journeys there is no excuse why you can’t keep active. Simply take a pit stop every couple of hours to do some stretches, jumps and squats- your body will thank you for it, and it’ll help keep you focused on the drive.
5. Stand Whilst On The Phone
So many people will search for a chair when they pick up the phone at work, but why not be different? It is easy to talk on the phone and stand up, or you could even go crazy- if you have a hands free phone- and pace around or even stretch. Seriously worth it when you think that standing up can double the calories you burn while you chat, and by pacing you could burn up to 225 calories for every hour you chat throughout the day.
6. Stand Whilst Snacking
We all do it when we get peckish, but by standing up when snacking, we will eat less, and metabolise the calories more quickly. I’m not advocating eating every meal in the upright position, but there is no reason not to crunch an apple or munch some nuts whilst standing.
You don’t have to follow social conventions and sit down for every activity. Why not be different and start making positive changes to your health by passing up the chair, and stand instead. Also to really get a fitness boost, why not try to walk during your lunch break, take the stairs rather than escalators and elevators, and even consider parking a few blocks further away. These changes are small and easy to make, but your future self will thank you for it!
